TNS Delivers Industry First Global Roaming Hub for CDMA Operators

Nov 29 2010

CDMA2000 wireless operators across the world can now expand their global roaming footprint and streamline the delivery of roaming services with Transaction Network Services’ (NYSE:TNS) new Roaming Hub for CDMA.

Based on a concept designed by the CDMA Development Group (CDG), this is the industry’s first global roaming hub for CDMA operators.

Members of the TNS Roaming Hub for CDMA can increase revenue, reduce costs and improve their customer experience while simplifying roaming operations. Signing one contract instead of multiple roaming agreements provides quicker access to countries around the world. In addition, it offers flexibility and choice as members can override default wholesale roaming rates and establish more attractive, bilateral rates.

Value-added services are also available, providing access to privileged discounts and flexible service bundles. The hub has built-in functionality to ensure it can grow, adapt and scale, providing support for CDMA operators for years to come, including support for migration to LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks.

Mike Keegan, President of the Telecommunication Services Division at Transaction Network Services, said: “We continue our commitment to invest in solutions that provide the industry with an efficient, flexible environment for secure and seamless voice, SMS and data roaming. With one contract, TNS’ Roaming Hub helps operators overcome the challenges of delivering services in emerging markets as well as reducing the difficulty and expense members incur obtaining roaming agreements with overseas partners generally.”

According to the CDG, CDMA2000 roaming is currently offered by 111 carriers in 55 countries. The opportunity to expand the international roaming footprint to over 300 carriers in 120 countries led the industry association to create the CDMA Roaming Hub concept in 2009, which is available to all CDG members.

“The CDG has always played a very active role in expanding international roaming,” said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group.  “The TNS hub solution simplifies and expedites the roaming implementation process by providing a streamlined, multilateral alternative to bilateral operator roaming agreements, and is already gaining interest from CDMA2000 carriers in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa.”

With the TNS Roaming Hub, new CDMA2000 operators become part of a global alliance, allowing them to offer improved services to their subscribers anywhere in the world and provide inbound roaming to visitors from other markets. With the increasing use of smart phones and other devices utilizing mobile broadband services, the need for seamless global data roaming is becoming more important.

TNS’ Roaming Hub enables faster rollout of roaming services by reducing agreement setup and testing time, data provisioning and signaling/network design. It enables the launch of new services without significant investment or administration, and the simplified contract helps reduce the risk of fraud.

TNS operates the largest, independent SS7 network in North America, providing network, database and next generation services to over 700 telecommunications companies around the world. TNS provides services to 40 countries worldwide and can access virtually any SS7 legacy or IP network around the globe.
